FAQ on Kundan Rangolis

  • What is the base on which these Rangolis are made?
Kundan Rangolis can be made using OHP sheets as a base. OHP sheet is the Overhead projector sheet which will be available in any stationary store. It can also be made with foam sheet or wood as a base. It depends on your choice.

  • Where can i get the beads.
I am based out of chennai. You can get the beads in T.Nagar (Ranganathan street- Pandian stores) You can also get it in Parry's corner (Ranganatha Mudali street). But you will have to get beads in bulk if you go to parrys. From T.nagar you can get the beads of your choice in loose too.

  • Why is it named Kundan Rangoli?
The stones used are called Kundan stones. These stones are also used for designing in sarees and churidhars. Hence the name.

  • How much time will it take to design a rangoli.
Its quite easy to make. The time depends on the size of the design and beads size. Small size beads occupy less space ,so it will take more time to stick if the beads are smaller.

  • What is the cost of the Rangolis in the market.
The cost varies from designer to designer. You have to check the following before getting convinced with the cost.
    * Cost of the beads used (beads differ in quality- You can see a few beads with double color or glittery. The same designs can be made with less cost beads)
    * The complexity of the design.
    * Whether the base is OHP or foam or wood.(OHP is cheap. Whreas foam is a bit costly then OHP)
    * The quality of the work.(the alignment of beads and the quality of the glue used)
    * And of course the packing if it has to be sent by post.

  • I am planning to make one design of my own. Any suggestions?
Well. Its a good idea. The real work depends on choosing the design, choosing the beads and colours and taking a rough sketch of the design in the OHP. If this is ready you are going to see something very beautiful in the next few hours.

  • What is the life of such Rangolis?
Any material depends on the way its maintained. Usually fevicol is used for sticking the stones. If not used rough and tough/not exposed to heat and is covered and kept using spongy material it may last long for years.

Tried a model in foam. It Came out awesome.A very beautiful gift for house warming functions and show piece for marriages. Cutting foam to the exact shape took some time. That too only the first piece had to be shaped carefully. The rest was very easy.Took nearly 6 days to complete 2 full rangolis.

Swami Alankaram Sets

Thought why not make some design in OHP sheets and make it similar to a necklace. Well the design came out fine. So did a big one and gave it to a temple nearby for Shri Ram's murthi. It was really eye catching.
